Warehouse Services is a national freight and logistics company with over 4,000 employees with 20 locations across the US. Their digital infrastructure, includes a large number of advanced logistics software as well as Microsoft Azure. However, they recently faced a significant cybersecurity challenge.
This case study details how their partnership with PhishFirewall , powered by its AI, “Lora”, transformed Warehouse Services cybersecurity posture in record time. After implementing PhishFirewall’s anti-phishing and security awareness training software platform, phish click rates were reduced to under 1%, a 10X reduction.
A malicious email, that was cleverly disguised as a communication from a supplier to a number of employees, had bypassed Warehouse Services’ email defenses. An employee clicked on the email thinking it came from a supplier and as a result exposed sensitive financial data to the cyber-criminal.
The incident helped illuminate that the company’s prior investment in traditional but outdated security awareness was not keeping the company secure. The traditional system was complicated, time consuming to administer, and not designed to address the biggest risk in cyber: the human element. A new approach had to be taken to ensure that the incident wouldn’t happen again.
Max, the IT director for Warehouse Services, met with several SAT providers. After seeing a demo from PhishFirewall, he was convinced it was the right choice. The onboarding process followed shortly, Where Crystal, a customer success manager assisted Max in configuring six email delivery rules and syncing PhishFirewall to their Azure directory.
Next they deployed, the Phish Report Button and integrated it across devices for all employees. With a company-wide email from the company's president, to show their commitment to cyber security and alliance with PhishFirewall the entire organization was armed with top-tier security awareness training.
One of PhishFirewall's most potent features is its ability to tailor training to individual needs. From warehouse workers to C-suite executives, everyone received personalized training. Lora, their new AI Cyber Coach, continually assessed user behavior, identified specific user susceptibilities, and sent role specific phishing simulations. By monitoring which phishing simulations users interact with, Lora addressed individual knowledge gaps, by crafting a personalized educational journey.
This advanced personalization results in engaging training modules. Employees watched real stories of ethical hackers employing similar techniques in real-world scenarios, making the training both educational and captivating. The system's effectiveness that employees, like "Betty," who thanked Lora, her AI Cyber Coach, for the insightful lessons just as though she were a real person
"Thank you for looking into it and your explanation. Appreciate you helping me to understand. Take Care, Betty”
Within four months, Warehouse Services’ phish click rate plummeted from 10% to 0.4%. Even after Lora's sophisticated AI recalibration at the nine-month mark which is designed to hone in on deeper user susceptibilities, the 16-month rolling average remained below 1%, a figure more that 5X times lower than traditional technology results.
This continuous recalibration and variation of phishing attacks is a key feature of PhishFirewall's platform. Unlike other systems where users recognize and adapt to recurring phishing patterns, PhishFirewall keeps users on their toes. Its continuous recalibration ensures users are always tested against their susceptibilities, driving down the average phish click rates to industry leading levels.
Furthermore, over 80% of the organization adopted the Phish Report Button, reinforcing the proactive cybersecurity culture. Even erroneous reports were turned into learning opportunities, with users receiving guidance on discerning between spam and genuinely malicious emails.
"The metrics speak for themselves. Since implementing PhishFirewall, our vulnerability to phishing attacks has plummeted. - Barry Cox President
The Phish Click Rate graph presents an intriguing trend, particularly evident with the pronounced spike at month 9. This spike in phishing click rates is not indicative of a system flaw or a lapse in user vigilance. Instead, it is a built in function that highlights Lora's AI adaptive learning capabilities.
As Lora sends phishing emails, she meticulously detects and hones in on user susceptibilities. This targeted approach will lead to spikes in phish click rates, as users are now being challenged more rigorously on their vulnerabilities.
The partnership between Warehouse Services, Inc. and PhishFirewall showcases the transformative power of AI-driven, personalized cybersecurity training. With Lora's adaptability and the deep insights from the analytics portal, organizations are equipped to fortify their digital defenses against the ever-evolving cyber landscape.
